Honour by Elif Shafak

I love reading and try to make sure that I spend some time with a good book every night as my ‘Mummy Treat’ to end the day.  I was delighted to find the BritMums/Penguin Book Club and jumped at the chance to join and read their March Book Club book – Honour by Elif Shafak.

When the book arrived I was immediately intrigued, as the story fused life in Turkey with a move to England.  Shafak is a leading Turkish writer and as I love learning about different cultures (something I miss from my days working in Export Sales) I knew that this book was going to be right up my street.

My mother died twice.  I promised myself I would not let her story be forgotten …..

I was hooked from the beginning.  The story centres around Pembe – a daughter, twin sister, mother, wife, friend and companion; and weaves around her, her family and the choices they make; both in Turkey and in England. It’s a story of love and betrayal and deeply held beliefs.

The title of the book Honour is the underlying theme of the story, along with shame, and the difference of meaning those two words have in the Turkish and English cultures.

I don’t want to dissect the story line, I’d much rather that you went and read the book yourself!  Suffice to say – if you enjoy a gripping storyline, with unexpected twists and turns, set in different times and different countries, with a number of interesting characters; then you will definately enjoy this book.  I will be looking out for other titles by Elif Shafak and looking forward to more ‘can’t put this book down‘ reads ahead.

Honour is published by Penguin Books and retails for £7.99

  1. I was hooked too – so glad you didn’t give the plot away in your review. It really is, as you suggest best to read it for yourself it’s so good.

  2. Galina V says:

I am in the middle of writing my review, and not sure how to express my thoughts without giving much of a plot away.

  3. Love this review as you do not give the plot away. Was brilliant wasn’t it.
I also tried to write a review without spoilers.
P.S. I am also 40 and a Mum to one boy.
